Republicans find key issues to peel away Latino voters from Democrats: Poll

A majority of Latino voters still say they favor Democratic candidates, but their overall loyalty to the party has begun to dwindle in recent years, according to recent polling.

Democrats have long dominated the Hispanic vote in local and national elections, securing an increasingly crucial voting bloc for the party. However, Latinos have slowly drifted away in recent years as they’ve signaled differences on issues such as crime and public safety.

A majority of Latino voters (32%) say neither party cares more about them, according to a recent Axios/Ipsos poll, indicating a growing lack of trust among the voting bloc. That’s an increase from the same time last year, when only 25% said both parties were equally unconcerned.

Latinos are also more likely to favor Democrats on a slew of key issues such as abortion, climate, and immigration. Meanwhile, Republicans outperform Democrats in areas such as crime, public safety, and the economy, possibly giving the GOP a boost ahead of the 2024 cycle.

The poll also found growing concern about the group’s future, with 40% of respondents saying it’s a “bad time to be a Latino or Hispanic person in America” — up 11 points from this time last year.

Democrats continue to fare better among Hispanic voters, however, with 30% of the bloc saying the party cares more about them than Republicans, the poll showed. Only 11% said the opposite.

However, a majority of voters contend that neither party is better than the other on immigration or crime, the poll showed. Another 38% say neither party is good at managing the federal budget, which could become a flashpoint issue in 2024 as Republicans and Democrats continue to butt heads over government spending.

The Axios/Ipsos poll surveyed 1,116 Hispanic voters between June 2-9 and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
